repositioning

What: Most senior citizens or handicapped people use motorized wheelchairs due to their inability to get around on their own. Users will most often have limited strength in their arms and torso, and thus need to use an external power source. They use a battery (usually a gel cell or wet cell) that must be re-charged on a regular basis. These types of wheelchairs are significantly heavier than most manual wheelchairs because they must house both the battery weight and the weight of any additional adaptive equipment. Even with the added weight of the electric wheelchair the difference in usability is astronomical.

Who: The product doesn’t specify it’s use to only senior citizens however, most commercials and ads are shown with older people using the product so its more of a suggestion that the product is more geared towards senior citizens. Electric wheel chairs have the ability to be useful and convenient to a younger, “twenty-something” age demographic (or those with the mindset of a “twenty-something”). Electric wheel chairs can be useful, when slightly modified, for those who can’t stand to be cooped up inside when injured. Twenty-something year olds get hurt doing extreme sports all the time, with a modified electric wheel chair they won’t be bound by the confines of their couch and will still be able to get the adrenaline rush that got them injured in the first place.

How: Electric wheelchairs aren’t very flashy and the only appeal it has to a twenty-something year old is it is a chair on wheels with a motor. In order to make electric wheelchairs more appealing slight modifications will be made. Bigger “off road” tires will replace the small smooth tires, a larger, more powerful motor will be put into it making it go from the average of 6 mph to 15+ mph. With the newly added wheels and motor a stronger set of batteries will be also added. The actual seat will be spring loaded for a smooth ride when riding over obstacles.

Why: For most senior citizens and those alike they don’t have other options to be mobile. The electric wheelchair is perfect for an elderly/handicapped person to get from place to place. If the electric wheelchair company’s broadened their age group they would generate more profit, especially with the upgrades needed to take an ordinary boring electric wheelchair into a day full of fun, excitement, and freedom from the confines of your home.
