An Alternative Blood Glucose Tester

Design Brief

What? For this product-repositioning project I will look at blood glucose testers, to see how I can make them appeal to a much younger crowd. Blood glucose testers are essential for people who live with diabetes. It allows them to conveniently check their blood glucose levels at home with a small device.

Who? The target audience will be people in their 20s. Most of the blood glucose testers that I have seen in stores have very generic packaging design that does not appeal to people in their 20s. The people in this demographic are generally up to date with technology and want something that functions as well as it looks. They are the ones who buy the MP3 players, tablets, e-readers and smart phones.

Where? This product would mainly be sold at pharmacies with over the counter medicine or drug stores such as; CVS, Rite-Aid, Target, Wal-Mart and Walgreens.

Why? I feel this would be beneficial because 8.3% of the US population is diabetic and diabetes is the 7th most common cause of death. By marketing a product to the younger demographic, it will give them a more hip alternative to choose from rather than only having the standard generic blood glucose meters.

How? By using a more streamline design for the product that resembles popular MP3 players or cell phones, the younger demographic will be more likely to want to buy this product. Offering various colors, or cases for their product can also nourish their unique and individualistic personalities. Being able to wirelessly (BlueTooth, WIFI) transmit data logs from the device to their computer or phones, will assist them in keeping track of their health.

  1. Very Neat & Inventive idea! I have considered getting one JUST to make sure everything is on the "Up and Up." I like the idea of having the variations in color and style for the "twenty something" audience. Might be cool for it to have access to apps such as "WEB MD" or "Eat thiis NOT that." Or something that stores all your readings for comparison.

  2. An iPhone/Android app is going to be one of my promotional designs, that will include a food intake log, weight, etc.

  3. What a great innovative idea to an essential piece of equipment for someone with diabetes. Especially someone who isn't too comfortable with their medical history, this might help them conceal their equipment. The "twenty-something" target audience makes up about 20% of the US population so sales would definitely increase. Maybe try adding customizable parts to it such as, colorful protective covers. Good luck.
